Congratulations to Luis F. Macias (Teaching and Learning)!
In Fall 2015, Latina/o Studies Program held a workshop to assist graduate students and junior faculty in preparing applications for the Ford Fellowship Program and we are happy to report that another one of our graduate students, and one who is also a student in the Latina/o Studies Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization, received Honorable Mention.
Ford Fellowships are awarded to less than 5% of those who apply, and we recognize the high honor that receiving Honorable Mention represents in this national competition. Congratulations to Luis F. Macias (Teaching and Learning) on this accomplishment! We include here a brief description of his research project here:
Luis’ research chronicles the tuition equity movement in Ohio. This movement is lead by the diverse youth and young adults who grew up in the state but live with uncertain long-term immigration status. This work explores the various ways they (as individuals and collectives) advocate for, and exercise, their right to be considered in-state residents at Ohio’s post-secondary institutions. Their testimonios on (a) navigating college admissions processes, (b) the campus climate, (c) personal and academic experiences, as well as the (d) the various ways they form support communities are treated as invaluable units of analysis to inform the practices of educators, university admissions officers and administrators, as well as state legislators.
