On March 4, 2020, Latina/o Studies held a workshop with Dr. Dinorah Sanchez-Loza. Dr. Sanchez-Loza's talk explored the political development occurring in and through two predominantly white high schools in central Ohio: the reproduction of settler politics generally, and the constructions of the Latinx “Other” specifically. Culled from a year-long comparative ethnography of two schools—one in an affluent suburb and the other in a working-class small town, this study finds that students deploy settler logics, imaginaries, and investments in their constructions of Latinxs and perceived Latinx issues. By focusing on the development of the racialized, settler ideologies, this talk challenges the idea of “good schools” and troubles the civic education occurring therein.
