Professor Enciso To Deliver Keynote on Literacy Research
Prof. Patricia Enciso, from the Department of Teaching and Learning, and President of the Literacy Research Association, will deliver an opening keynote address on Wednesday, Nov. 30th,2016 during the LRA Annual Conference. Prof. Enciso's address, entitled: Stories Lost and Found: Mobilizing Imagination in Literacy Research will review interdisciplinary scholarship that invokes imagination as a critical process in social equity and education. Drawing on data and findings from three research projects, Prof. Enciso will describe the ways Latinx, Black, White and East African middle school-age youth disrupt status quo assumptions about ‘who they are’ and ‘where they’re from’ as they engage in storytelling, drama, and visual arts to construct and negotiate stories about themselves and others.
The Literacy Research Association is the leading international association for scholars in the field of literacy studies. Prof. Enciso’s accomplishments as President include planning for and institutionalizing a Spanish language version for LRA’s annual Call for Proposals, continuing support for the STAR mentoring program for early career scholars of color, chairing the nomination and election of Board Members, several of whom are Latinx scholars, and chairing the 2015 conference in Carlsbad, California: Literacy, Equity and Imagination, featuring Spanish Bilingual sessions for the first time in the organization’s history.
