A Center For Ethnic Studies Workshop / Working Meeting on Critical Ethic Studies for Ohio Scholars

CES event with Ohio Ethnic Studies Scholars

Workshop on Ohio Ethnic Studies

January 25, 2019

The Center for Ethnic Studies hosted a gathering of Latinx Studies and American Indian Studies scholars from across the state of Ohio for a day of remembrance, reading, and planning. Scholars attended from Oberlin College, Denison University, Miami University of Ohio, University of Dayton, and Bowling Green State University. Several OSU students and faculty were also participants.

The day featured a memorial for Latinx and Religious Studies Scholar Luis Leon, who passed away in October 2018 at the age of 53 in Denver. Several people offered warm remembrances of Leon, who had visited Columbus and Bowling Green in the past to deliver lectures, and addressed the enormous impact of his brilliant scholarship on Latinx religiosity. We lament his passing.

In discussions about two readings from contemporary scholarship in ethnic studies, participants shared ideas about new directions the field and respective sub-fields. In discussions about the state of Latinx Studies and Ethnic Studies in Ohio, participants talked over ideas for growing the field and obstacles to this, possible future collaborations, curricular and institutional changes at each of our institutions, and individual research projects.

Co-organizers Theresa Delgadillo, OSU, and Pablo Mitchell, Oberlin College, thank all who participated and especially thank Nick Spitulski for assistance with arrangements.
