Pushing for Eco Justice Because…This Ain't No Makeover of Ruby Payne's Framework for Understanding Poverty. It's a Takeover: Latin@ Soul Making and F.I.R.M.E."

In recent years, Dr. Ruby Payne has positively impacted the lives and education of children in poverty throughout the world, or has she? What does it mean to teach children from poverty in a standards based accountability era of reform? This platica (dialogue) explores the lessons learned as a consultant for the "Aha! Process" who has questioned every aspect of the Payne program and developed activist pedagogies and media with migrant youth.

Felipe Vargas, desde Von Ormy, Texas . Felipe’s research interests include: Latin@ immigrant education policy, Latin@ youth gang formation, film production as a pedagogical tool, and the philosophy and economics of education.  He is a co-founder of Campecine: El Cine Campesino and Liberation Through Education High School Leadership Conference. FIRME has also produced various award winning documentaries with youth including “The Contaminated Valley.”  Felipe earned his B.A.in Political Science and Chican@ Studies from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas .  He is currently a fourth year doctoral student in the History, Philosophy, and Policy in Education Studies program at Indiana University-Bloomington.
